10 Excellent Ways to Get More LinkedIn Endorsements

Without a doubt one the most important recent LinkedIn innovations is the introduction of endorsements.  In this article I explain ten excellent tactics to help you get more LinkedIn endorsements.

Endorsements are a simple way to recognize someone in your network for their expertise in a specific field with just one click.

Since this new feature emerged I have been endorsed hundreds of times and I get new endorsements daily.

The endorsement success I have been able to achieve is undoubtedly thanks in part to the 10 tips for getting more LinkedIn endorsements I will now share.

Apply these tips to your profile and you too can enjoy the added social proof and opportunities that plenty of endorsements can bring.

1. Start by Adding The Skills That are Most Relevant to You

Unlike the example given below it makes sense to select just a handful of skills that you want to showcase.

With many choices some people become overwhelmed with choice and instead of endorsing you will simply skip on by.

Keep your skills as relevant as possible and with fewer choices for endorsement people viewing your profile will choose them more readily.

2. Remove Skills that are Have no Impact on Your Career

Since every endorsement is also a link to the profile of the person who made it some people endorse liberally and might endorse you for skills that are not directly relevant.

Keep your skills focused and you’ll get better results; it looks better to have 2 skills with 10 endorsements each than it does to have 20 skills with just one endorsement each.

3. Move the Endorsements Section Near the Top of Your Profile

Click “Edit” near the top of your profile and then use the arrow to the right of the “Skills & Expertise” title to grab the endorsements section and re-position it on your profile.

Personally I don’t put my endorsements at the very top of my profile, but I do put it directly underneath  my summary, near the top.

For me endorsements were added to the very bottom of my profile when the feature first came out and moving them up has lead to my being endorsed much more frequently.

4. Endorse Other Peoplethe-power-of-reciprocity

Reciprocity is a powerful element of influence.

Start with your closest colleagues, since these are the people who are most likely to return the favor.

However even people you have not met in person will endorse you if they like the work you do online, and you endorse them first.

I have only endorsed about a dozen or so connections I am not that familiar and although I do not know these people that well almost all of them have returned the favor.

5. Ask People to Endorse You

Send a quick message to people you have worked with and ask them to endorse you.  This will work especially well if you have already endorsed them.

Don’t make your message all about you.  Ask if there is something you can do to help the person you are messaging and this will certainly help you get more LinkedIn endorsements.

6. Get More People to Your LinkedIn Profile

Check out my article about LinkedIn SEO and discover how you can optimize your profile so that more people discover you through LinkedIn search.

In addition to those tips there here are a few more profile optimization tips for maximum visibility.

Customize your LinkedIn URL with your name.

For example my LinkedIn URL is: http://linkedin.com/in/garinkilpatrick

Complete your LinkedIn profile and make sure to link to it from your other profiles and websites.

7. Include a Call to Action in Your Summary

When people land on your profile they may or may not endorse you for a skill.

Include a call to action for people to endorse you and it stands to reason that more people will.

Below is the P.S. call to action I use at the bottom of my summary.

8. Offer an Incentive for People Who Endorse You

Offer an incentive for people to endorse you and more people will.

The better the incentive the more people will take action.

This tip is a bit risque as it calls into question if people are endorsing you because of your skills or because of the incentive,  however I am certain it would work.

One way to work this tip is simply to explain in your call to action that you will deliver a gift (like an eBook) to anyone who endorses you.

9. Update Your LinkedIn Status Often

Many people are on LinkedIn but few update their status.

This means if you do post updates to LinkedIn you’ll be getting onto the radar of your connections.

If you’re sharing insightful quotes and quality content you’ll also be giving them a reason to endorse you and since every post you make is posted with a link to your profile people who see your posts are just two click away from endorsing you.

10. Say Thanks

As you get more LinkedIn endorsements this presents great networking opportunities for you.

Saying thank you to people who endorse you is a great way to take your relationship with them from being a cold contact to being a real connection.

Not only will this lead to more endorsement (often times people you that for endorsing you once will endorse you again) it can also create other business opportunities.

Here’s the thank you I like to send whenever I get a chance:

Just wanted to say thank you for the endorsement.

If there is anything I can do to help you in your business, please let me know.

Have a great day.

If you try sending something similar you might be surprised at the additional endorsements and opportunities this creates.

Bonus Tip: Use Endorsements as a Stepping Stone

If you do not have many recommendations the thank you message you send after getting an endorsement is a great time to ask for one.

Saying “Thank you” for an endorsement creates good karma with your connections and helps position you as the kind of person they would want to work with.

    Hi Garin,
This is great advice.  But I have a problem.  I have people who don’t know my work endorsing me.  Obviously, they want to get me to endorse them.  I just don’t endorse people or products I don’t know.
     Any thoughts?

      Warren Hayford Hi Warren,
The tips in this article will help with getting more endorsements from all of your 1st connections.  Only 1st connections are able to endorse so I recommend not connecting with people until you have a good idea of who they are and the work they do.
I don’t see how there is a problem with people who don’t know your work endorsing you, since you are familiar enough with them to connect with them.  Endorsements will only make you look good and I don’t think your connections will be bothered if you don’t reciprocate if you don’t know their work.  As you get more and more endorsements you may not be comfortable or have time to endorse everyone who endorses you.  So don’t sweat it! 🙂
